Pet Rellocation in Panama

With the every day growing affluence of foreigners to Panama, whether on a temporary basis or with plans of considering our country as a second home, there is also a visible increase of pets accompanying their owners in this new important stage of their lives.

The rellocation of pets to Panama, mostly domestic animals (dogs & cats) is permitted under a mandatory quarantine regulated by the Quarantine Department of the Ministry of Rural Development (MIDA), together with Department of Control and Prevention of Zoonosis of the Ministry of Health (MINSA). The domiciliary quarantine is always allowed provided that all the legal papers of the animal are in order and in compliance with the health and administrative dispositions in force.

The requirements needed to rellocate domestic animals or pets to Panama, are as follows:

1. Vaccination against Rabies and Health Certificate : issued by a qualified veterinarian, which must be duly authenticated by the nearest Panamanian Embassy or Consulate abroad, and translated to Spanish.
2. Written importation request: of the domestic animaladdressedby the owner or through an attorney in Panama, to the Quarantine Department of the Ministry of Rural Development.
3. Import application form duly completed to the Department of Control and Prevention of Zoonosis,which may be submitted through an attorney three (3) days before the pet’s arrival, including the general pet’s information: breed, age, color, sex, name, origin and particular signs, place from departure, flight number, airline, date and hour of arrival and the owner /guardian’s general information (name, I.D., address and telephone) in Panama. In such application it must be stated the length of stay of the animal in Panama (temporary or permanent).
4. Proof of Payment of US$130.00 fees, in theNational Bank of Panama, located in the first floor of Tocumen International Airport, which a daily working schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
5. Delivery of Documents and Payment Receipts exclusively to the Quarantine Veterinarian of domestic animals of the Ministry of Health, which offices are also conveniently located in the Tocumen International Airport.
